“Malice at the Palace.”
On November 19, 2004, a massive brawl occurred during a game between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers in Auburn Hills, Michigan, which became one of the most infamous pages in NBA history. It began when Pacers forward Ron Artest (later known as Metta World Peace) committed a hard foul against Pistons center Ben Wallace.Wallace responded with a shove, which sparked a scuffle between the players.
The conflict seemed to begin to subside when Artest lay down on the referees’ table in an attempt to calm down. However, a fan threw a drink glass at Artest, causing him to rush into the stands and start a mass brawl between players and spectators. The incident led to numerous injuries and arrests, as well as serious disciplinary action by the NBA.
NBA Commissioner David Stern announced unprecedented disqualifications:
1 Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season, missing 86 games – the longest suspension for inappropriate behavior in league history.
2 Steven Jackson received a 30-match suspension.
3 Jermaine O’Neill – 25 matches (later reduced to 15).
4 Ben Wallace – 6 matches.
5 Several other players received lesser penalties.
The incident forced the NBA to review arena security measures and tighten rules of conduct for both players and fans.
