Oleksandr Stanislavovich Sirsky is a Ukrainian military figure, Colonel-General, Hero of Ukraine, since February 8, 2024 holds the position of Commander-in-Chief of the ZSU of Ukraine.He was born on July 26, 1965 in the village of Novinki, Vladimir region, in a military family.His childhood was spent in Kharkov, where he graduated from high school.
Education and the beginning of his military career
In 1986 he graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School.In 1996 he graduated with honors from the Academy of Zbroynie Forces and in 2005 – from the National Defense Academy of Ukraine with a gold medal.In the early 2000s he commanded the 72nd Independent Mechanized Brigade, stationed in Bila Tserkva, Kiev region, where he rose to the rank of Major General.
Participation in hostilities in the east of Ukraine
With the beginning of hostilities in eastern Ukraine in 2014, Sirsky was appointed chief of staff in the ATO.In February 2015, he participated in the battles for Debaltsevo, where he commanded the headquarters of sector “C” and organized the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the encirclement.
Further career and command positions
In 2016, he served as Chief of the Joint Operational Staff of the Zbroynie Forces of Ukraine.Since 2017, he led the Anti-Terrorist Operation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.In May 2019, he was appointed Commander of the Joint Operational Staff of the ZSU, and in August of the same year – Commander of the Ground Forces of the Zbroynie Forces of Ukraine.
Role in repelling a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022
Sirsky played a key role in the defense of Kiev at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.Thanks to his strategic leadership, Ukrainian forces were able to stop the enemy’s advance on the capital.In September 2022, he led a successful counteroffensive in Kharkiv region, as a result of which Ukrainian forces liberated significant territories, including the cities of Izium and Kupyansk.
Appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Zbroynimiye Forces
On February 8, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Oleksandr Sirskyy as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army Forces, replacing Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, due to the need to strengthen strategic leadership in the context of the ongoing war with Russia.
Kursk Operation 2024
In December 2024, under the leadership of Sirsky, an offensive operation was conducted in the Kursk region of Russia.According to him, this decision was made in order to thwart the enemy’s plans to attack Kharkiv and Sumy, as well as to relieve pressure on other parts of the front.The operation took the enemy by surprise and led to a decrease in the activity of Russian troops in most of the territories of Ukraine.
Awards and Recognition
